I Had an Idea . . .

I was inspired to start Exceptional English when I was teaching English as a second language (ESL) in the late 1990s. While living overseas, I quickly realized how important it can be to communicate in English . . . and how frustrating it can be when English is not one’s first language! One day, when I was editing a memo for a colleague (a non-native speaker of English), I had a light-bulb moment — this could be a great idea for a business!

With my background in science (I have a master’s degree in immunology from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) and with my love of words, I took a leap of faith and started Exceptional English in 1999 and then established the Exceptional English website in late 2001.

I am proud to say that, through positive word of mouth (the best type of advertising), Exceptional English has been serving clients all around the world in such diverse fields as business, science, medicine, social sciences, and the humanities for over 15 years. Time flies when you’re having fun!

As the managing editor of Exceptional English, I handle the day-to-day running of Exceptional English. I am also the chief editor at Exceptional English, so I edit most of the documents we receive. I also rely on two wonderful freelance editors during busy times of the year. They have been working with Exceptional English for about 10 years. Both are native speakers of English and possess master’s degrees from universities in the United States.

My goal in establishing Exceptional English has been (and will continue to be) to help people communicate effectively in English. Thank you to all our clients for entrusting Exceptional English with your projects. It is a pleasure working with you!
